Luangta Ma Wat Tham Muang Na

Luangta Ma 16Short Biography of
Venerable Acariya Varongkot Virivatharo (Luangta Ma)
Wat Phrommapanyo (Wat Tham Muang Na)

Thambon Muang Na, Amphor Chiang Dao

Chiang Mai, Thailand
Early Life
Luangta Ma’s original name is Varongkot Suwannakun. He was born on November 23rd 1934 in the Noraniwat district of Sakon Nakhon, a north-eastern province of Thailand. His father’s name is Wandee Suwannakun and his mother’s name is Sorpar Suwannakun. His parents had three children of which Vorangkot was the second.

Luangta Ma has been a lay disciple of Luangpu Du and practised meditation under Luang Pu’s guidance for more than 20 years. When his teacher was over 70 years old, he implored Luangta Ma to ordain as a monk. Luangta Ma complied with his teacher’s wish. He was ordained on Sunday, July 24th 1988 at 10:06 AM at Wat Buddhathaisawan in the Ayutthaya province. Venerable Ajahn Pathrakit (Luangpor Huan), the abbot of Wat Buddhathaisawan, was the preceptor of the ceremony. Venerable Ajahn Suangthorn Dhammanithed (nicknamed Boonsong) acted as first ordination teacher and Venerable Ajahn Pichit Kitarthorn (nicknamed Sanae) acted as the second ordination teacher.
Pilgrimage and Ascetic Practices
After Luangta Ma spent one lent in robes, he went to pay respect to Luangpor Huan and asked his permission to leave the monastery in order to go on a pilgrimage. He also took the Thirteen Austere Practices, which constitute an ascetic practice considered helpful by the Buddha for removing the defilements. Luangpor Huan gave his consent, upon which Luangta Ma went to pay respect to Luangpu Du at Wat Sakae. He arrived at night time when Luangpu Du was the only person residing at the abode at Wat Sakae. Luangpu Du gave him a sermon and wished him well. He finally added: “Wherever you stay, I will be with you. Take this amulet. If you need my assistance, just turn to the amulet.” With these words he gave him an amulet with Luangpu Du’s image imprinted on it, some travel utensils, and 500 Baht in cash.
Luangpu Du told Luangta Ma to go up north, yet he did not state any reason for it. In the morning, Luangpu Du sent a monk to bring Luangta Ma a lunch box, since he knew that Luangta Ma was too busy with preparations that morning and didn’t go on alms round.
After these events, Luangta Ma followed his master’s advice and went north. He became a solitary wandering monk and practised Tudong (pilgrimage on foot) through northern Thailand for several years. He often lived in caves to practice meditation. He experienced  many odd and unusual occurrences during this time. One day he reached Prathat Jomjaeng which was formerly known as Prathat Jomkithi. At this place, he meditated in the open and prayed to find a secluded place suitable for solitary meditation. Miraculously, an old man appeared in the morning and told Luangta Ma about a remote cave in the forest of Muang Na. If it wasn’t for the old man’s story, he would moved onwards to the Four Buddha Footprints in Mae Rim.

Muang Na Cave
Luangta Ma, however, decided to follow the old man’s lead. He sought the cave which the old man had told him about and -while on his way- asked Luangpu Du for guidance through serene contemplation. It wasn’t long until Luangta Ma found the cave, which the locals simply called Muang Na cave. The cave was exactly as the old man had told him. When he arrived there, Luangta Ma took up mediation and contacted Luangpu Du through contemplation.
In 1990 it became known to Luangta Ma that Luangpu Du had left his physical body. He went to Ayutthaya to join the royal funeral ceremony. After the ceremony, he returned to the Muang Na. Since then Luangta Ma practised solitary meditation at the cave for more than ten years. During this time he was supported by the Thai and Shan villagers who live in the Muang Na area.
Originally, Luangta Ma set out to seek enlightenment in this life, as epitomised by the Arahat ideal. Yet, when he advanced his meditation practice, he connected to previous stores of Bodhicitta. He felt deep sympathy for all beings and prayed to stay on, rather than to pass into Nirvana, in order to help all beings in the heaven, human, animal, and hell realms.
Consequently, Luangta Ma decided to give up the solitary life in order to help others to practise. He began building a temple around the cave in Muang Na. At the same time, he started to teach the Dhamma to people who came to the temple and he instructed them in meditation practice.
In recent years, Luangta Ma was able to attract a considerable following. He is now widely recognised in Northern Thailand; he is also known for his great kindness. It is obvious to his students that Luangta Ma follows the ideal of the Bodhisattva. He teaches the Dhamma to his students, as well as meditation and amulet making in the tradition of Luangpu Du. Thus Luangta Ma continues the lineage of his great Ayutthayan master Luangpu Du.

尊者阿姜Suangthorn Dhammanithed(绰号Boonsong)是第一受戒师和尊者阿姜Pichit Kitarthorn(绰号Sanae)担任第二受戒师。

Luang Phor Doo Wat Sakae

Kruba Lert Wat TungManTau

Phra Kru Sang Wat Inn

Phra Kru Sang Wat Inn

If you are looking for a seriously good mainstream Somdej amulet then those blessed by Phra Kru Sang Wat Inn, should be high on your list of possibilities. Phra Kru Sang was one of the most famous and revered monks of Wat Intraviharn, Bangkok, a temple well known for the 32-metre high, 10-meter wide standing Buddha image known as Phrasiariyametri, commonly referred to as Luang Phor To, after the great monk that created it, Pra Somdej Buddhachan Toh.

It took over 60 years to complete and is decorated in glass mosaics and 24-carat gold. The topknot of the Buddha image contains a relic of Lord Buddha originating from Sri Lanka. Wat Intharaviharn or more popularly known as “Wat In”  is located in Bangkhunphrom sub-district, Bangkok, at the nothern edge of the Banglamphoo area. It was built at the beginning of the  Ayuthaya period and was originally called Wat Rai Phrik.

Amulet collectors will be familiar with this temple due to the Somdej amulets created by Somdej Toh buried under the large buddha image, commonly referred to as Somdej Bangkhunprom. These amulets were originally created for the purpose of funding the construction of the great statue.

In fact, Somdej Phra Buddhachan Toh passed away at mid night on 22th July 1872 A.D. (2415 B.E.) in the hall for sermons at Wat IN. Wat Intraviharn has been blesed with a series of very sacred monks considered to be some of Thailand’s most revered.. Among them, Gurus like Somdej Phra Bhudhacharn (Toh) Promrangsi, Wat Rakang, Luang Phor Pu – Toh’s student and of course Phra Kru Sang whose amulets are much sought after

The history of Wat Intharaviharn can be traced back to reign of King Rama I ” where the King managed to suppress rebellion in Laos and brought members of the Lao royal family to settle in this area. One of these was Chao Inthawong, who was a devout Buddhist and helped to restore the local temple which is now Wat Intharawihan..

Somdej Toh first pioneered the idea of a standing Buddha and works began in 1867. His successor and royal student Luang Phor Pu and others finished the projects and the huge Buddha image, named as Luang Phor To,  was finally completed only in 1927.Previously Wat Intraviharn has also been named Wat Bangkunprom Nok or Wat Intraram, finally being renamed during the reign of King Rama VI as Wat Intraviharn.

When World War II broke out  many people sought refuge at the temple after the suggestion of the Supreme Patriarch of the Buddhist faith, Somdej Pra Sankaraj Pae.

Countless lives were saved despite numerous bombs falling within the vicinity liitle or no damge was incurred. It was thought that the power of the sacred statue commissioned by Somdej Toh was providing extreme protection.. Amulets blessed by Luang Phor Pu are very valuable and in extremely high demand. Even the least expensive pims will cost in excess of 75,000 Baht each, not suprsing as he was the disciple of Somdej Buddhachan Toh.Phra Kru Sung received the knowledge from Luang Phor Pu who is known to have been his mentor at Wat In. Amulets blessed by Luang Phor Sang are less expensive but just as efficacous.

Interestingly the amulets created by Luang Phor Sang and Luang Phor Pu are almost identical. It is thought by most scholars that the moulds were created by the same smiths.

The biggest difference is the amulets created by Luang Phor Pu are blank on the reverse, whilst those of Luang Phor Sang were embossed with two sacred spells known as Dokjun and Yant Ha,

Many unscrupulous individuals have erased the spells on the reverse of LP Sangs’ amulets to be sold as amulets created by Lunag Phor Pu. This incidentally has made original examples created by LP Sang rarer than those of his counterpart Luang Phor Pu, which has now led to a situation that his amulets are being faked.

Despite the fact that amulets created by Luang Phor Sang are less valuable it is generally agreed by all experts that the sacred power is identical. Phra Kru Sang blessed his amulets in B.E.2460 to raise funds to support the completion of the construction project of Pra Sri Ariyamettrai, or Luang Por Toh the famous sacred giant standing Buddha Image, initially started by Somdej Buddhachan Toh.

These pims are commonly referred to as Pra Pong Phra Kru Sang amulets and today, as in the past, are very highly respected for the sacred power to protect worshippers from danger, injury, whilst at the same time increase charm and fortune.

It is important that if you intend to acquire one of these pims you acquire a good reference book such as the one shown below and only buy from a reputable dealer who can provide all the necessary paperwork and certification.
